If you wish to have the best and most reliable performance out of your Mahlkonig EK43, then it behooves you to consider burr alignment as part of your regular maintenance. While the grind uniformity of the EK43 is impressive out of the box, over time the burrs may shift or become misaligned during regular maintenance and cleaning, and re-aligning them afterward can be tricky without the right tools. That’s where Titus Grinding’s EK43 alignment tool will make your life easier. Using a custom mounting bracket and a standard dial indicator, this alignment tool will allow you to check that your stationary burr is properly perpendicular to the drive shaft along its entire circumference. The kit includes everything you need to check and correct alignment – including strips of steel shim material, labeled by thickness.
You can use our video above as a basic guide for how to mount and use the tool to check alignment. If you encounter low spots while checking the dial indicator, take note of the measurement on the indicator and use a piece of the corresponding thickness of shim material to shim the burr. You may wish to mark the burr with a marker to keep track of where the low spot was, and use a small drop of superglue (cyanoacrylate) to adhere the shim to the underside of the burr. Cyanoacrylate glues can be released with heat, so the shim can be removed later if needed. After shimming the burr, repeat the process until the dial indicator shows a steady and consistent deflection all around the burr. Please note that this tool is designed to be used with the EK43 S, but can be used with the EK43 when the 0.2mm (or larger) shim is placed at the motor shaft with the aluminum block of the adjustment tool.
